This year the programme turns towards Seminar XVII, which Lacan gave in the wake of the student movements of 1968. Marking a turning point at which new concepts and formulations enter his teaching, the seminar is concerned on the one hand with how the social bond between people is structurally organised, and on the other with how psychoanalysis might occupy a different place among these forms of the bond.
The opening sessions take up two fundamental concepts that Lacan first set in opposition and came to think in an ever closer relation: the signifier and jouissance. How does the subject emerge in relation to the signifier? What do the master signifier, the unary trait, alienation and separation mean? Why has jouissance become more central over the years, and what are its guises in the clinic of our time?
We then move to the four discourses Lacan formulated: the master's discourse, the university discourse, the analytic discourse and the hysteric's discourse — social bonds turning respectively on the impossibility of governing, educating, analysing and making desire. Hysteria thus appears not only as a clinical structure but as a way the subject forms a social bond by directing its lack towards the Other.
The differences between the discourses raise the question of how authority, law and castration operate within the social bond. Hence the Oedipus complex — from Freud's myth through Lacan's three-times reading in Seminar V to its reworking in Seminar XVII — and the capitalist discourse Lacan would formulate a few years later: how does a discourse that promises to make our impossibilities possible treat lack and castration?

Guest Speakers
Alexandre Faure
A clinical psychologist working in child protection services for young people in exile. He holds a doctorate in clinical psychopathology for his thesis La traversée des exils and practises psychoanalysis in Rennes. He teaches at the Collège de Clinique Psychanalytique de l'Ouest and is a member of IF-EPFCL.
Carlos Gómez-Camarena
Full-time lecturer and researcher at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City and a member of the Mexico City Forum of IF-EPFCL. He holds a doctorate from Université Sorbonne Paris Cité, was part of the translation team for Barbara Cassin's Dictionary of Untranslatables, and edited Alain Badiou's trilogy on psychoanalysis and philosophy.
Nadine Cordova
Clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. AME at the EPFCL and a teacher at the Paris Clinical College.
Paola Malquori
A psychoanalyst practising in Rome. She completed her doctorate at the University of Toulouse Le Mirail. An Analyst Member of the School within IF-EPFCL, she directs a psychoanalytic laboratory researching otherness.
Radu Turcanu
Psychoanalyst, member of the EPFCL and AME, with a doctorate in psychoanalysis and psychopathology (Université Paris Diderot). He directed EPFCL-France between 2018 and 2020, is a founding member of the Romanian Forum and practises in Paris.
Rodrigo Abínzano
Psychoanalyst and doctor of psychology, member of the Buenos Aires Forum of IF-EPFCL. He teaches at the University of Buenos Aires and works in the adult clinic of the Ameghino Hospital. He is the author of four books on anorexia.
Simona Costa
Psychologist and psychoanalyst, member of EPFCL-France. She has worked at the Due Palazzi prison in Padua and at the CSAPA Boucebci addiction centre within the Jean Verdier Hospital. She practises in Paris and works at the COMEDE committee for the health of exiles in Bicêtre.
Registration
Fees are per module. Anyone enrolled in either module — or both — may attend the Lacan Symposium, the Study Day held in the spring term and all joint events at no extra charge.
Applicants should send an email introducing themselves, their professional background (training, degrees, further education) and their motivation. The subject line should state which module or modules the application is for; emails are answered within a week at most.
Those accepted transfer the fee to the account below before the seminars begin and send the receipt — students together with proof of student status — to the association's email address.
The modules are independent of one another and may be followed separately or together. Enrolling in both requires two separate payments.
